Adopt-a-Unit for the Holidays

MidMichigan Medical Center - Midland is kicking off a "7 Ways of Caring" campaign which promotes simple acts of kindness. 2020 has had great impact on health care workers, so volunteers are being asked to support the Medical Center's units with gratitude and holiday cheer. There are approximately 45-60 employees per unit including doctors, nurses, patient care technicians, and ancillary staff. Volunteers, groups or organizations are asked to create a basket, bag, or box with items for one unit per sign-up. Items to consider including: notes/cards of gratitude, healthy snacks like fruit: apples, bananas, & oranges, self-care items like hand lotion, and fun holiday items. Homemade food will not be accepted. 20 openings are available for sign-up. Drop-off will be between December 14-18, 2020.

Flood Victim Assistance: Drywall and Paneling Installation

Volunteers are needed to assist a victim of the 2020 flood in Midland County with home rebuilding construction. Volunteers will need experience in hanging drywall and installing paneling. The homeowner has all supplies needed, however volunteers should bring their own tools required for the jobs. Types of jobs for this project: drywall hanger, paneling installer, drywall finisher, and clean up.

Transportation Drivers

Transportation drivers are needed for the wheelchair accessible vans including maneuvering and strapping down wheelchairs. Drivers will use the Senior Services vehicles and generally volunteer one day a week Monday-Friday. Volunteers will drive older adults to doctor's appointments and for general errands. Subsequent background checks and driver's license checks are required as well as a 1-hour orientation/training. By Expressing Interest volunteers will be contacted to set up a ride along with an experienced driver to understand the process.

Meals On Wheels Drivers

Meals On Wheels drivers are needed for Senior Services throughout the county. Volunteers would be delivering meals right around lunchtime for the the Coleman Center in Coleman and Greendale Center in the West Midland Family Center. Volunteers use their own vehicles, mileage is reimbursed. Most drivers take one route a week(Monday-Friday) taking about 2 hours starting at 10:30 am or 11 am until about 12:30 pm or 1 pm. Regular drivers and substitute drivers are needed too. Due to the vulnerable population, Senior Services does not take court appointed community service volunteers. There is training, a background check and driver’s license check. By Expressing Interest volunteers will be contacted by Senior Services Community Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator, Tina Podboy-Laughner to set up a route.

On-Call Community Volunteers

United Way of Midland County is creating a volunteer list to help connect people with those who are willing to help our neighbors. By registering, you are showing your interest in being contacted for various volunteer opportunities of interest as they arise. We will keep your information on file should an opportunity become available that sounds like a great fit for you. Once you sign up, you will be contacted by Renee Urlaub, Volunteer Manager at United Way of Midland County, to discuss your interests.

Tutors Needed

The Legacy Center provides one-on-one tutoring to individuals from our community in Reading, Math, English as a Second Language, and Workforce Readiness Skills. Since the pandemic and schools closing early, some students are struggling with the current school year. Also, many people lost their jobs and may need new skills to find the right fit. Volunteers are asked to dedicate 2 hours per week to tutoring for approximately one year.
